Korean traditional musician Young Sub Lee will perform and discuss various forms of Korean music on the daegeum, (transverse Korean bamboo flute), as well as the danso (Korean endblown flute), janggu (drum) and taepyeongso (conical oboe). He will be accompanied on geomun-go (Korean zither) by Bok Eum Kim.
Young Sub Lee majored in daegeum performance and received his Master’s degree in composition from Chugye University. He is the recipient of the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts Director’s Award, and has won first prize in many prestigious Korean music competitions, including Dong-A Music Competition and Nangye Korean Music Competition. He has performed as a member of the orchestra for the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts, and serves as principal conductor and composer with the Korean Traditional Youth Orchestra. He is also an instructor in the Graduate School of Education at Chugye University of Arts, released a commercial recording for danso in 2007 titled Gajeun Hoesang, and performs with world music group Vinalog.
Mr. Lee is in Washington state for a three month artist residency sponsored by the Korean Traditional Performing Arts Foundation and hosted by Northwest Heritage Resources. As part of his residency, he is teaching Korean traditional instruments during spring quarter at the University of Washington Ethnomusicology Department.
