Jack Straw Productions and WCF present a series of talks and performances of new music. The series is free to the public. Refreshments are served. Events are wheelchair and special needs accessible. Contact Jack Straw for arrangements at (206) 634-0919.

 

Begun in 1999, the series has offered over 120 free presentations of visiting and local composers and performers to the public.

Cyrille Rose and the Clarinet

Cyrille Rose was one of the foremost clarinet pedagogues of the 19th century. Clarinettist Sean Osborn discusses his recent recording of Cyrille Rose's 32 Etudes, made with a grant from Jack Straw, and composing for the clarinet. Covered topics will include Rose's novel use of phrasing, the clarinets range, dynamic range, repertoire, technical possibilities, and "extended" techniques such as quarter-tones, multi-phonics, pitch bends, and other subjects.

 

Sean Osborn has traveled the US, Europe, and Japan as soloist and chamber musician, and traveled the world during his eleven years with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. He has also appeared as guest principal clarinet with the New York Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony, Seattle Symphony, and the American Symphony Orchestra. more

Michael Owcharuk will play recorded excerpts, perform with members of the Owcharuk Sextet, and premiere a new work.

 

Michael Owcharuk is a Seattle-based composer, pianist, and accordionist, working with various jazz, rock, classical, hip-hop, and theater ensembles and artists.holds a Bachelor of Music from Cornish College of the Arts, where he studied composition with Bern Herbolsheimer, and piano with Jovino Santos Neto. He has performed at Bumbershoot, Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley, Sounds Outside, 14/48: The World’s Quickest Theater Festival, and anywhere else they would have him. more
